$3.25 for cup of orange juice
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 05/25/2010 - 10:19
This morning, I was charged $3.25 for a cup of orange juice from XXXXX. I can buy a gallon of orange juice for that price. Why are businesses ripping people off? Government has raised customs fees and now they are taking away the cost of living increase for employees. Surely they should then decrease the custom fees.

I do agree with the high cost
I do agree with the high cost at some of these businesses. About when you go out to eat expect to pay for eating out! Bull crap.
I was leaving out of the airport some days ago and my flight was running late. Went over to the Hungry Horse in the departure hall and was waiting to purchase some food for my family and I. Thank God I stood and listen to the customer in front of me being ripped off. One cold Turkey sandwich, one muffin, two sodas and two hot dogs US$32.00! Of my gosh I just about fainted away! Can u imagine and the sodas was from the machine in a glass not even a full can of 12oz soda.
After expressing myself to some airport workers in the departure hall and not buying my family anything to eat I was told by one of the persons that the staff cost for a soda upstairs in the HH is CI$1.40 for a 12oz can of soda. Smoking tobacco!
I went on further to enquire about the currency exchange. To buy one USD is .90+ cents Cayman. How much of this does the Government get?
Now please I say to the Cayman Islands government and those persons that are in charge of regulating this crap please do something now, not start doing something but do something now! This is highway robbery and these businesses are allowed to get away with it.
You are responsible to control this.
At IHOP you pay that and more
At IHOP you pay that and more for orange juice and dont order it in Paris where you pay small fortune for it - when you eat out expect to pay - otherwise buy it in the supermarket.
I agree with you that when
I agree with you that when you eat out, expect to pay more because of the convenience plus the establishment's overhead, but your example of IHOP I cannot agree with...... Which IHOP you be goin to man? $3.25 CI.... the most I've ever seen OJ cost at an IHOP is ~$2.50 US. And this was in cities where the cost of living was high.....
As for Paris.... je ne sais pas.
At least in Paris your are
At least in Paris your are having your orange juice in somewhere which culture, history and a sense of civilised behavior. Oh and of course, at least the staff won't ask if you want to "box up" your uneaten food to take home.
Just don't go there again....
Just don't go there again.... tell your friends not to go there again.... word of mouth is a powerful thing. If enough people stop going then they will be forced to lower their prices. The unfortunate thing is that many people have become so accustomed to paying more for everything that they just don't think about it anymore.
Because store owners on this
Because store owners on this island:
1) Feel entitled to make the same income as high level professionals.
2) Have very little competition because of barriers to entry including the restrictions on business ownership and the negative impact of the trade and business licensing regime on competition.
These factors (especially the second) end up cost poorer Caymanians much much more of the income than they would ever believe.
