Pronunciation

I am curious about a local tendency in pronunciation. Jaques Scott is an important Caymanian retail outlet. Why do Caymanians and the store itself, refer to it as, "JAKE Scott?"  When Jaques Scott, if there ever was such a person, was born and his parents named him Jaques, I am sure that they never called him Jake. They would have pronounced the name 'ZHAHK' just as in Jaques Coustou.
A trivial matter and of no importance but it bothers me.

Jacques Scott was a very real

Jacques Scott was a very real person and a very pleasant person who like others took a chance when relocating here is the 60s. Also like many other chances he is largely forgotten.I include in these Drs Bennett and Smith whom many have reason to be grateful. Not all were lawyers, accountants or developers who made a pot of money. Pity really as these pioneers ought to be recognised. Many were true characters and many are sadly no longer with us.How soon they are forgotten.

As for the pronounciation you are quite correct but 40 years ago we all pronounced it correctly but there again we knew the man and we were respectful.

Jacques is still alive, in his 90's, and living in Florida.  He came here via Cuba.  He is an Englishman and pronounced his name 'Jake'.

Maybe but I bet his parents

Maybe but I bet his parents didn't. They'd have called him 'ZHAHK' or otherwise they'd have spelt it, J  A  K  E.

....... why do people name

....... why do people name their children Katie when most Westerners pronounce it 'Kaydee'? Let's ask everyone with the name Katie to spell their name differently or pronounce it "properly."

P.S. Mr & Mrs Scott if you are reading this, hope you are well and have been able to come back to Cayman for a wee vacation like you were hoping to.
