'Mad Cyclists' on our Roads??

When will RCIPS start paying attention to 'Mad' Cyclists  ?? I have never heard of a cyclist being prosecuted for dangerous driving or even stopped for same. We even saw a TV ad a while back ' touting' the issue of Safely negotiating a Roundabout and there for all to see was a guy riding his Bicyle on the Wrong side of the Road right into the Wrong side of the Roundabout, (in other words, 'against' the traffic).... The reason I mention this is that yesterday, as I am approaching a Roundabout to make a left turn - a cyclist comes 'flying' towards me on the wrong side of the Road and continues to enter the 'entry Road' ( the Road I was coming from) again on the wrong side of the Road (i.e. against the traffic).

I had to swerve to avoid hitting him or him hitting me and he simply looked at me with an incredulous look on his face like it was my fault. The corner he was coming from was a bit of a 'blind-side' to me anyway so he is lucky I was not speeding or answering my cellphone or texting or something.

We have cyclists continuously riding against the traffic - sometimes carrying a passenger on the crossbar, sometimes 2 abreast ...... and as I say, I have NEVER seen anyone cautioned or apprehended - the Police just ride past them.

I actually saw an accident on West Bay Road where a cyclist driving on the wrong side of the Road AND ON THE PAVEMENT  (they actually had pavement on this stretch of the Road) hit a lady who was exiting from her Apartment complex. He was obviously not looking at all and she probably instinctively looked right first , not expecting to have 'traffic' approaching her in the wrong 'lane'..... Fortunately, no-one was hurt  although the cyclist was thrown off his bike and onto her hood.............

At the end of the day - A bicycle is still a vehicle (just not a motorized vehicle) so they should not have the right to just drive their vehicle how 'they' wish (including ignoring traffic lights ). On the funny side,  I saw one TV skit on this subject... where a guy watched a cyclist get off his bicycle at the Red Light and push it through to the other side of the Road , then he got back on it and rode off  -  so the Car driver got out of his Car, turned the engine off, put it in Neutral and pushed it through to the other side of the Road, got back in the vehicle and drove off.

Now there's a thought - we all drive just like this and then we can't complain about the cyclist being a law unto themseves... (just kidding...!!)

Perhaps RCIPS could add this to their list along with 'little or no-action' for cellphone abusers or people who drive at night with their 'full-beam' on either blinding the approaching driver or blinding the driver he is behind ( who has the reflection of his 'full-beam' in all of their mirrors ).

Joggers - use lights and

Joggers - use lights and don't run two abreast. Especially the really fat ones, you take up most of a lane when you walk/jog two abreast.

Some perspective

How many car drivers have been killed or injured because of cyclists disobeying the laws or driving recklessly or drunk driving - if not zero than pretty close. How many cyclists and drivers, passengers and pedestrians have been killed or injured because of car drivers disobeying the laws, driving recklessly or drunk driving - perhaps 99.99%. Okay, so some cyclists may be annoying and causing problems, but if you want to complain about a REAL problem in Cayman, complain about the number of idiot drivers who continue to wreak havoc on the roads.

Mad Cyclists

Police should also add to the list those 'knucklehead Car Drivers' who slam their brakes on, make a turn and THEN start to put their Trafficators on to signal the turn they have ALREADY made.
Logic tells us that we should FIRST indicate (to give the car behind us a warning of what we're going to do) NEXT, apply our brakes (the car behind us isn't then taken by surprise and doesn't have to slam on his brakes ), FINALLY make the turn.
First - INDICATE THAT YOU ARE TURNING
Then - APPLY BRAKES
Finally - TURN
This should be one of the basic things taught to a learner driver - but very few people seem to even 'think' about the traffic behind them when turning.
Police - please ensure that this is one of the basic which the Driving Instructors teach their learner  drivers since you are now testing them - let's see how good they really are !
Easy,,,,,,  and back to, Cyclists - USE HAND SIGNALS !!

It is the cycling club

It is the cycling club entourage that get me.  They cycle 4 or 5 abreast and act as if wearing gaudy lycra gives you special traffic rights, especially if you are in or nearing middle age.  Here is a tip guys, if you can't finish your cycle by 6.50am then get in single file.

Of course you do...because

Of course you do...because blaming someone else is always easier than taking a moment and reflecting on ones own behaviour...realistically..do you approach cyclists carefully and slow down and overtake in a careful manner?  Or do you fly by them at breakneck speeds mere inches away from them in order to show them "Who's boss"?  Do you allow them to cross intersections safely or do you overtake them only to slam on your brakes and turn in front of them, necessitating them to either slam on their brakes, swerve violently or run off of the road or all three, to avoid colliding with the side of your car?  Do you turn your headlights on high beam when approaching a cyclist at night, thereby blinding them to oncoming dangers on the roadway or do you politley dim your lights as you are required to do at any other vehicle?  Do you approach major intersections cautiously and stop and look before you enter a main roadway or do you must have a quick glance and shot out onto the main road as quickly as you can in order to beat an oncoming car, never mind the cyclist who you nearly hit.  As someone who cycles quite a bit, I can tell you firsthand that I have experienced ALL of the above mentioned dangers.  I am a conscientious cyclist.  I ride as safely and courteously as I can.  I use lights on the Front AND rear of my bike whenever I have to cycle after dark.  I do not ride while listening to music as I choose to be aware of my surroundings at all times.  Having said all that, I still feel like I am taking my life in my hands every time I venture out on my bike, either to and from work or when I ride with other cyclists..I ride for health and environmental reasons...I just hope that one day my particular method of transport and exercise doesn't cost me my life...

South Sound Rd/ South Church St. is a 30 mph limit and overtaking my car in the dark at breakneck speed, is going to result in you causing a fatality, the road is normally used at that time by many runners, cyclists and dog walkers and sooner or later you are going to hit one.
