National Heroes Day

Today, everyone has been given the previlege of staying at home to celebrate our National Heroes.  In Grand Cayman the celebration  takes the form of a parade in the morning, leaving the citizens to enjoy the remainder of the day in fellowship with family and friends. Living on Cayman Brac does not afford me the honor of participating in the Hero's Day Parade. Thinking that this being a national day, I turned on my television to the local station; provided by Westar. To my surprise and dissappointment, I realize that instead of the National Heroes Parade, the CBC News was being televised. It is time for us to stop our constant complaint of a lack of national pride, and do all within our powers to ensure that our children are immersed in what is local.

Imagine the opportunities lost by Social Studies teachers here on the Brac, because our children have been deprived of the opportunity to participate in something that can only be to their benefit
Why do our children have no respect for their National Song, Flag, etc?  Could it be that by our own actions, we are telling them it really doesn't matter?  In most islands of the Carribbean, something as vital to the continuity of our heritage, would be broadcast on their local station.
To be fair, I believe that was the case in Grand Cayman. However, for reasons lost to me, the local station (channel one), on the Brac, did not think it was important enough to have us share in the experience.
The harvest we reap, is often determined by how we sow.  Just sharing my thoughts.

You missed a long drawn out political sppech my the Premier.  Over 25 minutes of babbling about everytineg form building the schools being a done wrong to the fact that we shuld still beat our children in schools as a for of punishment.     People came to see the citizens hnored not for the "honor" of listening to Mac run his mouth all morning.

By stealing the spot light

By stealing the spot light from the Honorees Mac did a diservice to the people of the Cayman Islands. The day was to be about "them" not "him".  He needs to realize tht The Cayman islands is not about him and that day inparticular was about the individuals being honored it was a day for political speaches.

Maybe if you called them

Maybe if you called them "outstanding citizens" instead of "national heroes" there would be more respect.
