Tourist robbed by two men

(CNS): Police have confirmed that a visitor from the United States was reportedly robbed along the West Bay Road on Tuesday. At about 10:20 last night officers on patrol came upon a 38-year-old man at the Owens Roberts international airport, who reported to them that earlier on he had been robbed on the West Bay Rd in the vicinity of the Hyatt hotel. He said that at around 9:50pm he was approached by two males who knocked him to the ground. They then took his metal clip which contained a Verizon incredible phone, ID, stamps and various cards and ran off. No cash was involved. He received minor injuries to one of his knees but did not require medical attention. (Photo Dennie WarrenJr)
He described both suspects as white males between the ages of 26 and 30 about 5’8” tall with short haircuts. The man said one robber was wearing a blue shirt and white shorts, the other, had a green shirt on the police did not say if either of the men were armed. The man who is from Oklahoma in the United States will be leaving the islands tomorrow, police said.
Anyone who was in the area at the time and might have witnessed the men leaving the scene are asked to call the George Town CID at 949 4222 or Crime Stoppers at 800 TIPS (8477)

CNS, my question is unrelated
CNS, my question is unrelated to the story but I can't find the appropriate place to lodge it.
I recall some months ago (8, 9), a man's body was discovered in the forest near the Linford Pierson Highway. Since then there has been no word on any attempts to determine his identity and how he died. Any chance of chasing down an answer with RCIPS?
I would like to think that a human life in Cayman has more value than being discarded and forgotten like garbage.

its amazing how stupid you people are, i mean really, you got time to sit here and argue about caymanians being called "white or red or light brown"? but let me clean up this story because this is cayman and aint nothing unna like more than to carry gossip and mix up a story. this gentleman was first officer on a comercial carrier. hence why he went back to the airport, thinking he could get on the next flt out. the poor guy was scared to death! and it was then and there the an airport offical convinced him to call the police. i wish you people would acutally read the sad story and taken in and imagine what he went through instead of being here arguing about something that doesnt have anything to do with this story.

So now tourists get robbed and we just deny it? Hmm sounds familiar as in Cayman has no gangs, drugs, guns, etc. Oh excuse me, I forgot our criminals have strict moral standards. They do not attack and rob tourists. Just remember once our reputation as a safe tourist destination is gone, we are left with banking/financial services which the U.S. and others are trying their best to destroy. Imagine being attacked in Miami or London. Would you know where to go or what to do? The man might have been stressed out of his mind and all we can do is argue about what "white" means. This is sad.

To Post 12:58 West Bay Road as described most times in these Police reports, is NOT West Bay. Factually speaking West Bay starts from the Governors Residence. The Hyatt in this case is considered in George Town. CNS Please when reporting insidences along 7 miles Beach Road, please make the proper description, since everyone is quick to blame the West Bayers for everything. I am a West Bayer and I am offended.

After reading this article and also being a tourist myself, I am wondering if the victim was robbed by expats? Also, there are some very light skinned Caymanians who I have thought were "white" and later found out by speaking to them (getting to know them) that they were actually locals(Caymanian born and bred).
I also find it hard to believe that this man found his way to the airport as after many visits to GC, I still find that the airport is hard to find except for following the many signs. It would not be the first place I would go if I was just robbed, but that is just me. Police stations are not easily labeled in GC though if I remember correctly.
Regarding the weapons...the article did not say that there was no weapons involved just that the police are not saying if weapons were involved. Another fact that may be of interest is that this man is from Oklahoma and he may not be a "world traveler" or from a city and he may have felt that the airport was his only option if he was shook from just being robbed and especially if he was on his own.
I would not judge him or his story. People usually do not go on vacation and make up stories of being robbed (IMO) especially if he is not claiming expensive material loss. It sounds to me like he was very frightened.
I am sorry this happened to him as I love GC and have travelled there many times. I hope the island's crime settles down and becomes a peaceful oasis again where people can live and holiday together in harmony without fear.

The report says West Bay Road. The incident occurred on West Bay Road (its not called 7 Mile Beach Road). The news report is accurate - it doesn't say the incident occurred in West Bay at all.

I know that West Bay Road is not in West Bay. I was under not misapprehension. But we all know that the bad eggs of Cayman are concentrated in West Bay and we need to address that to protect everyone, especially visitors on West Bay Road.
It does not mean everyone in West Bay is a criminal. Texans are concentrated in the America. That statement does not imply that all Americans are Texans.

I would have gone straight to the nearest Bar / restaurant and asked them to call police, there are restaurants in that vicinity. Its strange behavior unless there is something the police are not telling us.

He was robbed by the Beach Suites and yet 30 minutes later he was at the airport? Why wouldn't he go to the police station, or report what happened at the hotel. All sounds very fishy

Where he reported the incident and the race of the perps is less relevant.
You cannot always expect logical decision making after someone has been through a traumatic experience. Perhaps in his shock and instant desire to leave after this experience he went straight to the airport.
The fact is that this incident occurred in a zone that is supposed to be one of the most safe areas in Cayman for tourists and locals is very disturbing.

Ahh... Someone that thinks like a local and not a tourist....
If you are a tourist, you pretty much know two things for sure... Where the airport is where you started your vacation holiday (where you hope there will be some sort of law enforcement) and the hotel where you are staying at, where there is only security guards, if you can find them.
Ask any tourist on the street where the police station is and I bet you will not find too many that can tell you. But ask where the airport is, where there are signs on the street to direct you to? I bet quite a few can get there!
Picture yourself in a strange surrounding and then put yourself in this circumstance.

He went to the airport as that was the one place where he knew there were police officers. He had his phone stolen, so he couldnt call 911, and figured going to the airport was the fastest way of getting police attention. He is a tourist, so he wouldnt know where the police station is.

Maybe the guy was in a panicked state and just wanted to get the "F" out of GC and that was his best option, to him, at the moment. As for why he didn't stop anyone- it was dark, he is in a foreign country, he just got knocked down and robbed. I am not sure I would have gotten myself to the airport, but I certainly would be leary about stopping people on the road to ask ...anything! Who does he know who he could trust! BUT...he does know how to get to the airport.
Another thing that may have crossed his mind is ...get to the airport and square away all details and get on the first available flight. How does he know that there aren't any flights out at night. He is not from GC.
Why are people picking apart his story? There are white people in GC. There is crime in GC. There has even been robberies as of late that have not used weapons. I think people should be more compassionate for this man and what he went through and worry about the results on tourism and that it may be the new trend.

Perhaps the airport was the only place he knew to go. If they took his passport, I know it would be one of the first places I would go to report my passport being stolen. No passport, no way to get the H#**L off the island. Perhaps they should provide tourists upon arrival with a list of emergency phone numbers in case they are robbed, beaten up, etc... The crime in Cayman has to be reduced against foreigners and Caymanians or it is going to further reduce tourism arrivals.

Maybe its easy to sit in judgement in the cold light of day, but it said his ID was stolen, not his passport, I read that as driving license.
My first response is calling for help, that's why I make a point of knowing the emergency service number in any country I visit, its even easier if its the same as my home country and speak the same language. However, if I didn't have a phone I would usually try and find one somewhere brightly lit, open and staffed - like a gas station. Failing that a restaurant, or bar, I know there's a couple on Seven mile somewhere near the Hyatt that might have been open at 9.50pm.
No come to think of it I would walk for half an hour past Caymana Bay, down the bypass and through industrial park to the airport following the signs in the dark. No, maybe a walk back to my rental parked (at a restaurant, bar, hotel?), past the gas stations and restaurants and bars and hotels, and then drive to the airport.
I'm not trying to blame the victim here, or at least that wasn't my intention, if it was as he said then shame on the criminals.
Looks like they got away with nothing - credit cards and phone can be cancelled and worth nothing, no cash. A little odd.

The police must be very
The police must be very visible on patrol on West Bay Road between 8pm and 2am. It is so important to our economy and too close to West Bay to not ramp up the patrols.

We should also follow through on a permanent road block and police check at the West Bay 4 way stop, certainly at least between 8pm and 2am too. Most wrongdoings in Cayman either start in West Bay, end in West Bay or both.

That is a bit ignorant Alan to say that most crimminal offences start or are tied to West Bay. I trust that you have the evidence to support your claim. Crime occurs in all parts of Cayman and isn't just a West Bay issue. We need to have a Police Station on West Bay Rd and more vigilant officers on patrol and CCTV cameras to deter crime.
