Huge water bills for January

So imagine my shock when I opened my water bill this month and found it to be six times my usual average. I went down to the Water Authority, spoke to the customer service representative (perhaps representative sans customer service may be a better description) who then tells me that I must have had a leaking toilet, a burst pipe under my foundation, someone stealing my water or something else but the bill was accurate.
I then got the excuse that meters were read early in December and so this may simply be a case of more days being billed. I explained to the representative that this was six times my average which a review of his records will show, therefore, even if I was billed for 52 days, the most I would expect is a bill for twice that amount.
Needless to say I got no relief, his only offer to me was to enter into a payment plan to settle the bill but stated that I should continue to pay something to avoid disconnection.
Has anyone else experienced this situation? I have now received representations from 4 households claiming their water bills were astronomically high this month. Could we have all sprung the same leak, is there a water thief going around the Island or is the Water Authority fixing the revenues before the impending sale to make the Company look better?
Interested to hear your views Cayman.

Welcome to the Cayman Islands, Have you been convicted of a Sex Crime?

As a father of a teenage Daughter I am a bit concerned about what is happening to our small island, the number of shooting, gangs and now robberies of pedestrians. Awhile back there was a big up roar about sex offenders or persons convicted of sex crimes be registered on a national registry, I guess it didn’t make it to legislation. Here’s something to consider; On any given day we have anywhere from 10 - 15 thousand visitors roaming about central George Town and visiting our beaches that disembark from the cruise ships, this figure does not include overnight visitors from incoming flights. Does anyone know if these person’s notify the relevant authorities of the country they intend to visit that they have been convicted of a sex crime and if so; what steps are taken to ensure the safety of the public.

National Heroes Day

Today, everyone has been given the previlege of staying at home to celebrate our National Heroes.  In Grand Cayman the celebration  takes the form of a parade in the morning, leaving the citizens to enjoy the remainder of the day in fellowship with family and friends. Living on Cayman Brac does not afford me the honor of participating in the Hero's Day Parade. Thinking that this being a national day, I turned on my television to the local station; provided by Westar. To my surprise and dissappointment, I realize that instead of the National Heroes Parade, the CBC News was being televised. It is time for us to stop our constant complaint of a lack of national pride, and do all within our powers to ensure that our children are immersed in what is local.

Over seas sales reps

Why are these people allowed to come here and sell there goods when the same thing is available in Island?
The same quaility article at the same price can be found on Island by companies that employ caymanians and pay all fees associated with running a business here.
These sales reps pay nothing!
P.S. I would love to see some of the invoicing!
Customs you may want to check some of these invoices against the goods.

Is Apartheid in The Cayman Islands

Caymanians do not seem to realize the seriousness of their own plight of joblessness surged by this UDP government election since 2009.. I am speechless, that unemployed individuals are so quiet and thinks that it's ok to live in poverty daily and be denied the right to work in their own country. I can't think of another country in the Caribbean that tolerates this kind of situation Here Are The Facts: Cayman is truly an apartheid country, and it can not be denied. The elite amongst us including leadership have already denied the presence of gangs in our schools, well who will be the first to deny apartheid in the Cayman Islands?

Health hazzards BT people will face near a dump site

Why be concerned about former dumps and landfills?

In the past, dumps were located in areas thought to have little value. These areas include gravel pits, ravines, swamps or other lands. Home and business waste was often dumped in these areas. Unfortunately, this practice led to health and environmental concerns. Some former dumps have contaminated groundwater used for drinking. Other sites have exposed waste; or fire hazards from seeping landfill gases.

Today, modern landfills are designed for safety. Landfills built since the mid-1980s are designed and operated to prevent environmental contamination.

Government must use the $40 million to immediately put people back to work

According to another local news media there is a whopping $40 million dollars sitting in the Public coffers of the Cayman Islands government. Have you ever heard such thing in this day and age where there are over ,3000 people unemployed, behind on their mortgages and much more. Can anyone in government explain why those mega bucks are not being used to create jobs for people out of work and why is it that Dart is offering mortgage assistance to Caymanians instead of Government?

Why continue to keep the cloak of secrecy over Shetty project?

If my memory is correct wasn't the first phase to this project to include 2000 beds as set out in the original MOU, now it’s 140 beds, not a good start for USD 1.2 BILLION in concessions!
Why hasn't Dr. Shetty FULLY released public the feasibility report completed by Deliotte in India with all the numbers, so we Caymanians can have a better understanding of this project that is projected when completed to be 1/3 of our economy?? Since the UDP Gov’t gave up so much in concession we should at least have a clearer picture of what we are getting in return, this is only fair?

Illegal road side vendors

Why is it that nothing is done about these road side vendors that are selling without trade and business licenses. It is doing nothing but slapping the ligitimate business in the face. I pay T&B, salaries, pensions, health, rent, unilities etc etc etc. I tried to call someone to comlain and got nothing but answer machines, when I finaly went and spoke to some one I was told that it was Immigrations problem then Customs then some new department that no one seemed to know about. They are even selling outside the gates of port authority and little shacks set up at spotts dock. My T&B clearly states that I CAN NOT sell outside of my store, well I have news for T&B enforcement whoever you are. Come and get me!

Hands-Free Phones Just As Dangerous

When someone is talking to you, your brain is listening, processing and thinking about what’s being said — even if you’re in the driver’s seat trying to concentrate on traffic. That’s why drivers get distracted during cellphone conversations, even when using hands-free phones, researchers say. It’s also part of the reason why the National Transportation Safety Board made a recommendation this week it knows a lot of drivers won’t like — that states ban hands-free, as well as hand-held, cellphone use while driving. What’s next? No passengers? No kids? No tuning the radio?
