Thieves steal Caybrew medals

caybrew empty medal case.jpg(CNS): Staff at the Cayman Islands Brewery were left shaking their heads this morning when they discovered that burglars had stolen the medals they had won at a Caribbean Beer Festival. During the break-in, which happened in the early hours of the morning by what is understood to be a lone burglar, cash and memorabilia were stolen from the home of Caybrew, as well as the medals. A spokesperson from CIB said everyone at the brewery was very upset over the theft of the medals, which he pointed out we're not real gold and of no monetary value at all but of enormous sentimental value to the team. (Photo: The thief left the empty medal cases)

The police were called to the brewery on Shamrock Road by staff who were on site at the time of the break-in and arrived while the thief was still there. Despite giving chase, police were unable to catch the suspect. However the brewery spokesperson was confident that he was caught on CCTV and was hopeful he would be apprehended  and the medals recovered.

There has been a rash of home

There has been a rash of home break-ins and the police need to start patroling these neighborhood areas and catch the opportunistic criminals.
These thieves use cell phones and look-outs and work in small teams.  RCIP PLEASE start triangulating cellular tower calls to crimes.  Why not look at the gas station top up logs too....The same people hang out in the same area!!!
Beef up your patrols and QUESTION people that hang about when they should be working!  On THAT note, I'd like to see some published ARRESTS from the Department of Immigration ENFORECEMENT division!!!  I'm tired of seeing dozens of people hanging about GT asking for work because they got here with a Caymanian work permit sponsor for LESS than part time work and are trying to scratch up a living....this is ripe for turning people into thieves.
Controlling crime needs many approaches.  Immigration, Community, Better patrols, more questioning, traffic stops, ENFORCEMENT!  Start giving out tickets for littering and start from there- zero tolerance, it is time!!!
Heck, I spent a lot of time in North America as a kid and we were a lot more afraid of the polce there.  We thought they were around every corner and we would get caught.  Start with more traffic stops, and show the community that we will catch you!

Congratulations to the

Congratulations to the police. They did a fine job of showing up. We live in the area and now feel absolutely assured that the police will do a fantastic job in assisting us if we run into a criminal.  This guy escaped on a bike so apparently the police don't have any way of travelling 10 mph.

Can we please please PLEASE get these guys some training and institute a physical fitness test?

There is truly a possibly

There is truly a possibly sad aspect to this story. Is there a possibility that the eejit who stole the medals thought that they were " REAL " gold, and thought he would be able to sell them as such. If so, he is in for a major let down, and will end up as the laughing stock of the " stolen goods " merchants in Cayman or Jamaica.

Another unemployed or home

Another unemployed or home grown bandit, such a shame that Caymanians have to restort to stealing when a few years ago before  the influx of expats a time when Caymanians were poor but honest employed home grown honest people.  Such a sad state when you are being displaced and forced to commit crimes and the very people who take away your jobs poke fun at you about being unemployed.

Nobody "forces" anybody to

Nobody "forces" anybody to commit crimes and those who do commit crimes can only blame themselves and their own weaknesses.  In the times that I have been out of work and had no money to pay bills, I grew much of my own food, joined a temping agency, did any kind of menial work I could find and continued in the meantime to apply for every office job I was qualified for.  No matter how desperate I am nobody "forces" me to do anything, and no matter how bad things get I will never, never resort to crime, nor would I ever need to provided I am prudent and resourceful enough.

If police officers are not

If police officers are not armed, of course the offenders will see it, and run away fearlessly. And let's say that the offenders are armed, would a police officer be so stupid to chase after them unarmed?

Yes, that would be nice.  It might have been a mistake to disclose the medals weren't gold.  Now they may be thrown away to get rid of evidence.

The only reason the burgler

The only reason the burgler escaped was because he ran into oncoming traffic and the officer giving chase rightly backed off to avoid being run over by vehicles travelling at high speed!
He then caught up with the criminal who ran into thick bush whilst being pursued by the cop before losing sight of him, (presumably because the scum knew the area well). He then co-ordinated all other police whilst searching the area himself.
Well done to that officer who did all he could with the limited resources he had.
Where was the police helicopter or the expensive dogs we kept hearing about?
