almost 50% of native plant species at risk
Everyone living in Cayman should take a look at this study.
http://dps.plants.ox.ac.uk/bol/cayman
P.S. Does anyone know if it is possible to buy any of these native species at local plant nurseries? Or from the Botanic Park?
The Botanic Park has a Native
The Botanic Park has a Native Tree Nursery which has a wonderful selection of native plants at very reasonable prices-many are under $15!! You can find, among others, Black Mastic, Cabbage Tree, Mahogany, White Fiddlewood, Cayman Sage, Silver Thatch and so many more. I have already purchased and planted many of these in our garden and they grow amazingly quickly in a garden setting, giving us nice shade in just a couple of years.
The native plants are largely drought tolerant, incredibly pest and disease-free, and, of course, nearly immune to strong winds.
The Botanic Park Nursery is open 7 days a week-happy planting!
Does it really matter what a
Does it really matter what a law says to Government? They will continue to do what is in their best interest regardless. Its the Cayman way. But it will make sure so one else can do it first so better than nothing.
We don't need more
We don't need more development.... we need to focus on improving the developments that are already existing & making customer service actually serve the customer.
I take it that the few who
I take it that the few who are not for the conservation law, are the well-off and influencial few that in for making dollars. What else would be the reason to oppose such a law? The law is just to protect our environment from reckless development that is usually done in haste to make money. It is about time we need to take care on what we do.
The answer to this one is
The answer to this one is obvious as written. I am surprised it is not 100%. What you should do is write an article on what was actually proposed in the Draft Law. Then ask people to vote on that after they are informed. Everyone in their right mind will vote for a "conservation law now" but if they actually realize how it was written and what it contained they may change their minds.
This is one of those polls that does not actually get a meaningful result because the voters are without the correct information. It is getting to be a very frequent type of poll in the local press recently.
I for one support an environmental protection law but one that is written properly and one that protects the truly environmentally sensitive areas. To find those areas needs research and scientific evidence. Given the amount of development that will come to the Cayman Islands over the next 30 years it is critical that we do this now and not propose a law that is unworkable.
Stifle development?? Stifle
Stifle development?? Stifle DEVELOPMENT??????
cns did you put that in as a joke question because people are actually voting on it.
to those of you who did: development AND... a decent conservation law are not in opposition. as a matter of fact if you don't take care of conservation issues you won't have any further development. let me try to be a little clearer cayman is an ISLAND!!
get it? normally... islands have limited amounts of space and resources. IE trees, green space, beaches.
if you want to plunder those for development........CHOOSE ANOTHER ISLAND!!!!! ANY OTHER ISLAND. BUT NOT THIS ONE!
how about manhattan?? coney island???? IDJITS
This place is so corrupt that
This place is so corrupt that a new law will only be a way to give preferential treatment to political friends or family members anyway.
Why bother? It's too late
Why bother? It's too late now. What we really need are hundreds of massive bulldozers and a fresh start.
