We have enough MLA's running

We have enough MLA's running the Cayman Islands into the ground already! No thank you!

Half of them are doing

Half of them are doing nothing at the moment and just collecting a huge salary and using tax payers money. If they were getting only $800 per month as it should be then we would see if they would want to be an MLA. Our elder statesmen did it for the love of Cayman not to make money. Next elections I think we should sweep them all out of the house. Mackeeva has been in West Bay for over 24 years and half our roads still have pot holes, bums walking around, mental disables not cared for and crime on the rise so tell me if he's worth paying anything to.

I say we reduce it to 10 and MLA's get only $800 per month as they are only in the house 3 months and the other 9 just taking flights to Cuba and Vegas as side honchos. I say just have an elected District council that serves on 2 years and would run the day to day affairs and pay them instead.

We have supported losers for far too long and enough is enough.

Blessings to all.

  Unfortunatley they are

Unfortunatley they are doing what they were taught to do by those above them.  Face facts.  This is what Caymanians do.  This is why Caymanians don't get hired for jobs where they NEED someone who works. Want to fix it?  Train young Caymanians to the work ethics and skill levels of the rest of the world.  Yes thats right!  Education, education, education!  With real test and up to the level of everyone else.  Not what Cayman has now.  Caymans culture is its own worse enemy.

The impetus to add to the

The impetus to add to the number of MLAs is that Cabinet can then be increased. It is a simple fact that each Cabinet Minister has an oversized portfolio and there may be greater efficiency and effectiveness if there are more ministers. There is little point in making irrelevant comparisons with mayors in small towns. The size of Cayman's population belies the complexity and vast array of issues, both domestic and international with which we are faced. The same cannot be said for smalltown, U.S.A. or U.K. A better comparison would be for our sister overseas territory which has a similar economy and only a slightly larger population. First, Bermuda has a bicameral legislature with a senate and a house of representatives. There are 36 representatives in the house and 11 members of the senate.  There are 13 members of Cabinet. I think we compare quite well in Cayman with only 15 MLAs and 5 members of Cabinet. We will compare well even if this increased to 18 MLAs and 7 Cabinet members. This puts the issue into proper perspective.

Of course people are rightly concerned that this will increase the cost of govt. Inevitably it will.

Things will only change for

Things will only change for the political, social, and economic better in Cayman when the voting population becomes brave enought to bring the Bush/Tibbetts era of ineffective, dictatorial, knock-about party politics to a close.  Cayman is too small for big and expensive government.  Most US towns with a population of around 50-60K have a Mayor and a few elected administrative officials!

Somehow, someway,  the people of Cayman must find a way to bring the Bush/Tibbetts era to close.  Perhaps a third party may emerge before the next election; or perhaps a number of independants will find favor and enough votes to break up the divisive "boys clubs"?

We do not need more MLA's we need more accountability.

Keep the current 15 and give the people one man one vote and single member constituencies where each representative can be held more accountable.

No.   We already have too

No.   We already have too many.  One MLA per district is how it should be - and cut out all the rest, thus saving the country a significant amount of money and unnecessary hassle.

The UK seems to manage with

The UK seems to manage with one MP per 900,000 people.  The US manages on a representative for every 730,000 or so.  Out of a population of 35,000 (let us not include the many long term residents who are illegally disenfranchised), there is going to be one for every 1,800 citizens.  That is pathetic, grandiose and wholly unnecessary.  7 or 9 would be sufficent.

Your 'Sums' are wrong!

The UK has roughly one MP for every 75,000 people.

However, your point is correct there are far too many MLAs. I would say 5 would be about right number for Cayman.
