Commissioner of Police

I nominate Juliette Gooding the former manager of 911 in the Cayman Islands for Commissioner of Police.  Common sense, respect for subordinates, no fear or favour - willing to look at alternatives rather than what we did for 20 years and so on.  Leadership, abilaty she got it and she is Caymanian by Paper and in heart

Should Derek Haines be asked to rejoin the RCIP

I am a retired Chief Investigator and had served with Derek in the ICAC/HK for almost 3 years when he was seconded from UK Police. Derek has always been my tutor and friend. That was the time when corruption in Hong Kong was still rampant and anti-corruption work had been extremely difficult. Derek was not only an ace detective but he also demonstrated utmost integrity amd wisdom. Being an honest and practical man, he never succumb to political pressure whether it be coming from inside the Commission or outside. I would never doubt his ability and devotion to work as a leader. I believe he is an extremely suitable person for the police service in the Cayman Islands.

I have known Derek for many

I have known Derek for many years and in a few capacities. He is by no means a perfect person. But the main point with him is that he has integrity and is a leader. I have many friends and aquaintances on the force, both Caymanian and expat, who like him. Primarily for those reasons. Any decent person can tell the difference between a leader and a bureaucrat but when your a cop on the street and your life is in the balance it is critical that you believe in what you are doing. True leaders create that belief. The last few Chiefs have been obvious bureaucrats including the current one. Their deeds and words betray them. I don't know why he isn't in charge. Obviously someone very powerful is afraid of him. Maybe they willchange thier mind when the crooks are crawling through thier window

And what do we do if he

And what do we do if he returns and nothing changes? Who or what do we blame then? We love supposedly easy solutions in Cayman. Solve the costs of the civil service with this report or amending that law. Get jobs for Caymanians by making it next to impossible for foreigners to get them.Solve bureaucratic delays by bending the laws or ignoring them or cussing civil servants. Fix crime by keeping out foreigners who we all know are the main culprits (if many posts on CNS are anything to go by). When all else fails, blame the UK and the governor. But let us never blame our own greed, skewed values, laziness and incompetence.

Crime will only get worse

I spent 7 years in the RCIP.  I left as a Sergeant and saw many changes.  One truth that I know for a fact was that I would follow Mr Haines anywhere.  During Ivan I was with him during a rescue of a mother and child at the height of the storm from a house that lost its roof.  He was not blind to the truth of what was really happening with crime on the Island.  All of us in the RCIP were truely amazed that he was let go.

Give him a chance and you will see....

Mr. Haines is a true officer, policing is ingrained in his soul.  He is a man who is an Officer and always will be an Officer.

This is what Cayman needs, someone who is committed to the job and always will be.

For those of you who know and those of you who don't, if it wasn't for him after Hurricane Ivan...well it would have been much worse.  Just think about it...if a hurricane of that precedent hit the Island now...don't want to think about it....

After all, he has been here a while, has the local knowledge (is that what the threat is?!!) and can sort things out quickly.

And a lot of local ex-Officers just may re-join for the fight!

As for the votes against him...we all know who is voting against him...the criminals!!!!

Invite him back....for the GOOD of Cayman!

Something interesting going

Something interesting going on here.  A poll, or polls, with instant results forming a consensus.  I happen to believe this is the purest form of democracy.  And it was attempted once in Oregon.  We called it Instant Electorate.  Each week, a subject of local interest was put forth.  Parties of both sides were allowed to put their agendas on public access television.  The policies were debated.  Then people entered their votes online or by phone with their Social Security numbers.  The results were used to form public policy.  Simple.  So simple that politicians cancelled the experiment.  Knowing that their jobs were on the line and the perks that went along with them.  The offices, the secretaries, the expense accounts.  Democracy was rearing it's ugly head and that wouldn't do. Lobbyists ran scared as they witnesses their influencebecoming meaningless and irrelevant. So it was back to the same old, same old.  But for a moment in time.

CNS is accomplishing the same thing for us.  We can reach a valid consensus.  We can debate much like they do in the legislature.  And it doesn't cost us a thing!  And in the process we become actively involved.  Is this not what democracy is intended to accomplish?  That we are actively involved in the process?  I for one think so.  This is the future.  Because these decisions are too important to be left in the hands of politicians.

Power to the People.

Thanks Nicky and Wendy.

He may not be the best man

He may not be the best man for the job.  I don't know much about him but he will be someone to listen too.  What does he think about the recent upswing in crime and what does he think will need to be done? Does he think he can help?

Come on!

Who is this man???

A SAVIOR!

Please... enough already... crime is increasing not because of his absense, but because on how the RCIP is being managed.

They don't need more officers!  What they need is new management!

Even Derek and the brightest officers in the RCIP would tell you that!

History has shown that most

History has shown that most polls that go against the current of the Government in power are ignored. Hopefully this time with deaths and injuries the Governor, LOGB and Cabinet will be more open minded. Derek Haines would be the much needed "jump start" for the fight against crime. DH can get crime under control but IMHO he would need a solid 5 year no revoke contract, blank cheque funding and most important  zero political interference. Part of the problem with the surge of crime is the politico's getting involved in something they have no experience in. And so far we have seen very little proactive CIG leadership with the crime issue in our country.

I'm am voting yes that

I'm am voting yes that he should be returned, however, I am very doubtful that Baines or anybody in Government will do anything about it other than to see it as a personal affrontation rather than looking at the big  picture and the good this man could do for our country.

By the way I am a Caymanian, if it makes a difference...
